Job Description

Street Maintenance Job

Performs all street repair duties, such as hauling dirt off from ditch cleaning operations, mowing and weed eating the retention ponds, State and City R.O.W.S and Airport Facility, drives large trucks and equipment, flags traffic, installs/maintains traffic control signage/devices, maintains drainage facilities, and assists other City departments when needed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs manual labor for street, drainage, and traffic maintenance, operations, and construction.
  • Repairs potholes, street failures using pavement saw, shovel, pic-axe, broom, tamper/compactor and oil sprayer.
  • Checks out equipment and trucks for safety and maintenance needs; cleans equipment and trucks as needed.
  • Drives dump truck and operates equipment, such as backhoe, street stripping machine, street sweeper, jack hammer, chainsaw, chippers, mower, weed eater and various power tools.
  • Trim trees, brush, cleans debris and removes illegal dumping in the right-of-way.
  • Performs other physical tasks as assigned such as but not limited to flagging traffic, cleaning ditchesmanholes, curbs, fence construction and repairs, and picks up garbage, mowing, weed eating, loading brush and logs, tree trimming, brush chipping, pave streets, crack seal streets, place and remove barricades for flooding events, pothole, and edge repair.
  • Installs and makes new street signs. Maintains traffic signs and puts up new ones in accordance with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Provides traffic control for construction activities, emergencies, and various types of events.
  • Prepares appropriate paperwork for task / jobs. Performs other assigned tasks related to City functions. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: High school / GED education preferred, but minimum level reading/writing skills acceptable. Related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid Texas Drivers License. Must live within 25 minutes of City limits of Lockhart for timely response to public emergencies. Must be available for on-call duty after hours, weekends, holidays, and respond within a timely manner.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to make decisions based on needs and safety. Ability to communicate well with supervisor, fellow employees and public. Ability to read street name signs and follow written instructions.

Physical Demands: The work is medium which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following additional physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Work Environment: Work is performed in extreme heat, high humidity, cold, rainy and adverse weather conditions. Noise from traffic, equipment, and tools are also factors. Works with hot asphalt patching material and tack oil. Must utilize personal protective equipment as required.
