The unit is a step-down from critical care, focusing on medical/surgical telemetry. Patients may include those with conditions such as chest pain, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The unit does not accept patients post-cath lab unless a radial artery was used. The unit also manages patients with cardiac-related issues, requiring skills in higher-level care. Procedures performed include thoracentesis, peritoneal dialysis, tracheostomy care, pacemaker management, and CIWA protocols. The patient ratio on the unit is 5:1. Staffing consists of multiple registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, and a unit clerk for support. Essential equipment includes IV pumps, high-flow oxygen devices, and bipap machines. The documentation system utilized is Meditech Expanse. Patient experience initiatives involve bedside shift rounds and effective handoff communication. The unit is recognized as a STEMI hospital and stroke center, also serving as a Level II trauma center.
