JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Painter Apprentice
Reports To: Supervisor
Employment Type: Apprenticeship (Full-Time)

Summary/Objective:

The Painter Apprentice position is a full-time, paid opportunity designed for individuals seeking to develop skills in commercial and residential painting. Apprentices will receive hands-on, on-the-job training from experienced journeyman painters, along with company-supported related instruction. The Painter Apprentice will assist in surface preparation, application of paints, stains, and protective coatings, and perform clean-up tasks across various job sites. This role emphasizes safe work practices, attention to detail, and teamwork while learning industry-standard painting techniques and tools.

  • Surface Preparation: Clean, wash, and treat surfaces using appropriate solutions; remove old finishes by sanding, scraping, or blasting; fill cracks and holes with caulk, putty, or plaster to ensure surfaces are ready for painting.
  • Surface Protection: Cover and protect nearby areas using drop cloths, masking tape, and remove fixtures to prevent damage during painting.
  • Priming and Sealing: Apply primers or sealers to bare wood, metal, or treated surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of topcoats.
  • Application of Paint and Finishes: Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or other finishes using brushes, rollers, or spray guns on equipment, buildings, and other structures.
  • Mixing and Matching Materials: Mix paint, stains, or varnishes with required thinners or additives to achieve desired color, texture, and consistency.
  • Finishing and Detailing: Use techniques like sponging, ragging, layering, faux finishing, and stenciling for decorative finishes; polish final coats to the specified finish.
  • Scaffolding and Work Access Setup: Erect scaffolding, ladders, or swing gates to safely access work areas at various heights.
  • Blueprint and Work Order Review: Interpret blueprints, specifications, or supervisor instructions to determine work scope and requirements.
  • Estimation and Material Planning: Calculate material needs and estimate costs based on surface measurements and job orders; order tools and materials considering durability and customer preferences.
  • Specialized Applications: Apply waterproofing and sealants, spray or brush protective coatings like hot plastics or pitch, and operate baking ovens to cure or finish coated items.

Qualification, Competencies and Requirements

  • WORK ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • AGE: Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • RESIDENCY: Must have resided in Guam for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years prior to entry into the program. A Mayor’s Verification of Residency is required upon hire.
  • COMMITMENT: Must be able to attend a minimum of two (2) classes per week, as specified by the apprenticeship program standards, while maintaining a full-time (40-hour) work schedule with PFM.

Work Environment

  • Work outside in various conditions including heat, humidity, rain, dust, noise and cold
  • Must be able to lift 20-30 pounds at times
  • Must be willing to work between multiple worksites

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, hourly position. Hours of Operation are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. However, due to operational needs, may be required to work before or after normal hours of operations, on weekends or holidays.

No travel is expected for this position.
