Job Description

The Head Men's Basketball Coach at Utah State University is responsible for the overall development and advancement of a competitive athletic Varsity Men’s Division I Basketball Program. In consultation with the Director of Athletics, create an environment that demonstrates a high moral and ethical culture, creating a remarkable student-athlete experience and behavior surrounding good sportsmanship and success.

Recruit athletes, mentors athletes, fosters athletic, emotional, and academic group of student athletes. Oversees sports equipment, practice plans and schedules, skill development, designs coaching strategies. Oversees public and media relations. Coordinates team travel and schedule. Adheres to all rules and regulations.

 

The incumbent will identify, recruit, retain, mentor and develop student-athletes to continue a winning tradition at USU. The head coach is responsible for practice plans, recruiting, scheduling, budgeting, player skill development, game preparation and complying with conference and NCAA rules. Use organizational and administrative skills to ensure an effectively run program of player development and game preparation, preparing budgets, planning team travel, assisting in the media relations, community service as well as, organizing and conducting practice sessions, recruiting student-athletes, other duties as assigned.

 

  • Ensure that all aspects of the program are administered with student-athlete welfare as the top priority.
  • Prepare, develop and advance a training program to assist student­-athletes physically and mentally for competition, training athletes to adjust and respond to conditions relative to competitions.
  • Advances and determines the recruitment program by identifying, observing, evaluating, contacting, and recruiting prospective student-­athletes.
  • Prepare a plan for each practice and make sure players assimilate into the system.
  • Develop and implement a strategic competition schedule that provides the best opportunity for selection to and advancement in the Mountain West Conference and NCAA Tournament, in conjunction with sport supervisor.
  • Works closely with Sports Medicine staff and team physician(s) to ensure the safety and health of student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate strong support for the academic mission of the University, (working with the academic support offices and resources on campus) and the academic progress and ultimate ensuring progress toward graduation.
  • Provide student­-athletes with all available campus resources that leads to academic success and a valued student-athlete experience.
  • Evaluate all program needs. Determine changes and adjustments needed to build a successful winning program.
  • Establishes and communicates team rules and regulations regarding, but not limited to, academic, athletic and social expectations/guidelines.
  • Supervise, evaluate, educate and develop all assistant coaches within the Men’s Basketball staff.
  • Supervise assistant coaches, student managers and other sport-specific support staff to ensure their compliance with applicable rules, policies and procedures. Provide orientation, training and remediation as needed.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Working knowledge of Division I NCAA bylaws, rules, eligibility and regulations.
  • Must be a strong communicator exhibiting skills for strong relationships with coaching staff, student-athletes, departmental staff, recruits, donors and community members.
  • Maintain durable partnerships with university personnel.
  • Participate in community engagement.
  • Attend community functions to promote and educate the public on Utah State University Athletics and Men’s Basketball.
  • Actively assist with the Blue Aggie fundraising efforts and additional athletic fund raising as assigned.
  • Develop a positive image of the Men’s Basketball program.
  • Contribute to marketing efforts to enhance Men’s Basketball within Utah State University.
  • Develop, administer, review and maintain an annual budget requirement to ensure the program operates within the parameters.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in men’s basketball intercollegiate coaching at a Division I institution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in appropriate discipline
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • High ethical standards and work ethic
  • A working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Collegiate and/or professional level participant experience

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. This position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting. This position requires nearly continuous standing, repetitive hand motions, and reaching overhead.

Utah State is in its 11th year as a member of the Mountain West and has been a Division I-A/Bowl Championship Series football playing school in each of its 126 seasons of competition. USU joined the Mountain States/Skyline Conference in 1938 until 1961. USU then played as an independent from 1962-77, when it became a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association in 1978. The PCAA changed its name to the Big West Conference in 1988. Following the 2000 season, when the Big West no longer sponsored football, USU spent two years as an independent (2001-02) and two years in the Sun Belt Conference (2003-04) before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2005 for eight seasons.

 

Utah State is traditionally one of the strongest academic schools in the Rocky Mountain Region as its nearly 400 student-athletes have a 90 percent graduation success rate and a cumulative 3.39 grade-point average.

 

On the fields of competition, Utah State’s 16 varsity sports have combined to win 37 conference championships over the past 18 years, while its football team is playing in its 11th bowl game in the past 13 seasons.

 

Utah State has won National Championships in volleyball (1978) and softball (1980, 1981), while its football team is playing in its 17th bowl game this year. USU men’s basketball has advanced to the NCAA Tournament 23 times in school history, while its volleyball program has played in the NCAA Tournament six times and its soccer program three times.

 

In all, Utah State sponsors men’s sports in basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track & field. Women’s sports sponsored by USU include basketball, cross country, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball.
