Job Description

Job Description

Overview:

Our client is seeking an experienced and proactive Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead and manage all aspects of safety and environmental programs within a heavy manufacturing facility located in Muskegon, MI . This is a strategic and hands-on role, ideal for someone passionate about cultivating a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. You'll be the key liaison between operations, leadership, and regulatory bodies-working across departments to reduce risk, drive continuous improvement, and ensure safe, environmentally sound workplace practices. The role balances both office and production floor presence, requiring a leader who's comfortable in steel-toed boots and equally effective in a boardroom discussion. If you're looking to make a tangible impact on workplace safety and environmental stewardship in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing environment, this opportunity is built for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage EHS programs across the assigned facility, driving a culture of safety, compliance, and proactive risk management.
  • Develop and implement procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state safety and environmental regulations.
  • Act as the facility's subject matter expert on environmental and safety protocols, collaborating with internal stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead the incident learning process, including root cause analysis and corrective/preventative action plans.
  • Manage regulatory inspections, citations, and the site's emergency response protocols.
  • Oversee the medical surveillance program and qualification processes.
  • Partner with HR on workers' compensation and return-to-work strategies.
  • Maintain required documentation and ensure all records align with current regulations and internal standards.
  • Conduct regular plant floor inspections, safety audits, and ergonomic assessments.
  • Deliver effective training programs in safe work practices for all levels of the workforce.
  • Support sustainability efforts and contribute to corporate environmental management system (EMS) initiatives.
  • Foster psychological safety and trusted relationships at all levels of the organization-from hourly employees to senior leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5-10 years of experience in EHS leadership within a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA , EPA , and other relevant federal and state safety and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead safety programs and successfully drive culture change.
  • Experience with environmental compliance programs (CAA, CWA, RCRA).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and educate across multiple levels of an organization.
  • Comfortable with both strategic planning and hands-on execution.

Preferred Experience:

  • Background in foundry safety or similar high-risk industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene techniques such as air and noise sampling.
  • Experience facilitating learning teams or methodologies related to Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) , Safety Differently , or Safety II .
  • Prior involvement in sustainability initiatives or EMS program development.
  • Track record of leading successful safety improvement or risk-reduction projects.

Working Environment:

  • Split between office (60%) and production floor (40%).
  • Must be comfortable working in a heavy industrial/manufacturing environment.

Titles Encouraged to Apply:

  • EHS Manager
  • Environmental Manager
  • Safety Manager
  • Health & Safety Lead
  • Senior EHS Specialist
