Overview

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeastern United States.

We are looking for a highly motivated Director of Environmental Planning in the Northern California area . The ideal candidate will have 20+ years of related work experience and excel at leading a team of environmental professionals, managing complex CEQA and NEPA projects, pursuing new business development opportunities, and providing client stewardship.

Who You Are

  • You are an experienced Senior Consultant in environmental planning seeking a leadership opportunity within a dynamic, growing organization.
  • You have a minimum of 20 years of experience leading complex projects and guiding high-performing teams in California (Northern California preferred), with a bachelors or masters degree and substantial relevant experience.
  • You are motivated to advance an established team of environmental professionals, with emphasis on mentoring, professional development, teamwork, and growth.
  • You have the knowledge to serve as a primary author or senior reviewer of specialized and complex environmental documents.
  • You have comprehensive knowledge of NEPA, CEQA, and related regulations.
  • You thrive in collaborative environments, with the ability to communicate complex topics persuasively to individuals and groups.
  • You have experience managing the entire project life cycle, including proposals, day-to-day project tasks, budgets, and resource management.
  • You have client-facing experience, business development involvement, and the ability to build long-term client relationships, including leading cross-practice and cross-regional initiatives.
  • You hold a Bachelors or Masters degree with major course work in environmental science or a related interdisciplinary field.

What You Will Do for ESA

  • Lead large, complex projects and act as a technical specialist, developing technical approaches to address project issues for environmental planning studies and interdisciplinary projects.
  • Demonstrate understanding of project and client management principles and practices; develop technical documents and creative solutions within guidelines, while delivering on budget and schedule.
  • Provide mentorship and career development guidance for junior and mid-level staff; participate in regional leadership and decision-making; serve as primary author for specialized/complex environmental documents when needed.
  • Represent ESA in the marketplace by leading client meetings and presenting at public forums, workshops, and hearings, conveying complex technical information clearly.
  • Participate in marketing and business development efforts in a team environment, contributing to pursuit decisions, technical input to proposals, marketing materials, and interviews.
