Job Description

Wofford College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of music and director of bands position to begin in August 2024. The music program at Wofford is in an exciting phase of growth with strong faculty and administrative support for the continued transformation of the program from an extra-curricular activity to a major-granting department. We are seeking an innovative and inspiring leader who can develop and implement a vision for a successful band program within the context of a liberal arts curriculum.

At Wofford, faculty serve as teacher-scholars dedicated to the education and mentorship of undergraduates in a liberal arts tradition. Wofford embraces a broad definition of scholarship that includes creative work, as well as discipline-specific, pedagogical, and interdisciplinary research. Faculty earn tenure after six years by demonstrating excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development, and service to the college.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A terminal degree (Ph.D., DMA, or equivalent) in conducting or music education.
• Demonstrated excellence in conducting and directing bands.
• Proven success, or evidence for future success, in recruiting for and building a thriving band program.
• Commitment to classroom teaching and a record of effective instruction at the undergraduate and/or secondary levels.
• A record of scholarly or creative activity in the field of music.
• At least two years of prior undergraduate teaching experience is strongly preferred; successful candidates might also have experience directing high school band ensembles.
• Interest and/or experience in collaborating within and outside of the music department.
• Excellent communication, leadership and organizational skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide leadership as the director of bands, overseeing all aspects of the colleges band program, including conducting Woffords Concert Band and Pep/Jazz Band.
• Teach undergraduate courses in music, including a rotation of American Music, World Music and Music Appreciation, or other courses that align with the candidates strengths and the departments needs.
• Develop and implement a plan for recruiting students to the band program.
• Mentor and advise music students, fostering their academic and artistic growth.
• Engage in curriculum development, contributing to the enhancement and expansion of the music programs offerings.
• Contribute actively to the colleges artistic and cultural life through performances, workshops and collaborations.
• Participate in departmental meetings, committees and other service duties as needed.
